CULTURE AND TRADITION
Due to the fact that, throughout history Ribadavia has been
inhabited by different peoples and civilisations, today it maintains
a strong cultural tradition. It is the setting of important
international celebrations and events throughout the year, and has
become the focal point for cultural and leisure activities in the
Ribeiro. |

Takes place between the last
week in April and the first week in May, and has been recognised as
being of national touristic interest. Competitions, wine tasting,
conferences, cultural activities and demonstrations are just some of
the activities on offer. In addition, there is a fair of the local
wine cooperatives and agricultural companies, and there are musical
and folkloric activities. |

For one day, Ribadavia goes
back in time to the Middle Ages, to a time when Ribadavia was the
capital of the Kingdom of Galicia. The people truly experience an
old way of life, dressing in typical clothes of the period and using
the currency of the day, the maravedí. It has been recognised as
being of national touristic interest and it has to be seen to be
believed. |

Usually takes place in July,
and lasts for up to 2 weeks. Throughout the festival groups from all
over the world perform both in the auditorium of the castle, and in
the old town. It is one of the oldest, most traditional, and most
important festivals in Galicia. |

At the weekend throughout the
months of July, August and September in the open-air auditorium of
the castle you can enjoy a variety of cultural activities including
music, theatre and folklore. This gives the summer nights in
Ribadavia additional flavour and atmosphere. |

The grape harvest takes place
throughout the last 3 weeks in September in all the Ribeiro region. |

Religious ceremonies and
Baroque-style processions. The most typical processions are the “Encuentro”,
“Os Caladiños”, and “el
Sto. Entierro”. There is a wide variety of sweets and typical
dishes for this occasion, including bica (sponge cake), rosquillas (small
ring-shaped cake), almendrados (almond flavoured) and roscón de
Pascua (typical cake eaten at Easter). |

In the first weeks of
September Ribadavia celebrates its Patron Saint, “la Virgen del
Portal”. People come from all parts of the Ribeiro and Galicia to
worship the Virgin, and to take part in the religious processions,
and the variety of musical, cultural, sporting and folkloric
activities that are organised during this festival. |

Processions, competitions and
prizes. Food and cakes typical of the fiesta: orejas (typical
Galician cake), flores (typical Galician cake), filloas (pancakes),
pan de brona, (maize bread) shoulder of pork with vegetables,
cachuncha (pig’s head) and tostadas de leche (bread soaked in milk
and egg, and fried). |

This annual pilgrimage takes
place on the 29th April to worship San Pedro Mártir, who reputedly
had the power to cure the ill and the mad. Pilgrims from all over
Galicia convene in the Church of Santo Domingo, and traditionally
they eat bicotas (sweet pastry figures which they buy to give thanks). |

important being the “FESTA DO PEMENTO”
(pepper) in Arnoia, and the “FESTA DA VENDIMIA”
(harvest) in Leiro. •

Take place on the 10th and the 25th of each month. •
TRADITIONAL SWEETS AND DESSERTS
Rosquillas (small ring-shaped cake),
Melindres (small, ball-shaped cake),
Almendrados (almond flavoured),
Bicas (sponge cake),
Roscón (typical Galician cake),
Cañitas (cream cakes),
Cocos (coconut flavoured) and Jewish
